Reading Controversial Issues

Class, Read "Controversial Issues" pages 483-514. We will discuss these issues this week and next week. There are several controversial issues in the chapter. Focus on "Cyber bullying," "Texting and its adverse effects," "Global warming," and "cellphones and driving safety." Write study notes and answer the "Critical Thinking" questions fowowing each issue. Finally, write a reflection on only ONE of the issues that you relate to most. Narrative Reading and Writing

Hi class. Please read the two narrative stories I gave you. Do the comprehension questions following the stories. Also, think about a personal story or important event or discovery that you can reflect on. Please give your story much consideration. Class Introduction

Class Introduction Hello class, Welcome to College Reading Strategies.This course is a performance based course providing intensive, direct instruction leading to rapid improvement in reading and study strategies needed for your college and career success. You will learn to use the study strategies from this course and apply them to your other courses. The primary goals of this course is to help college developmental readers to develop effective strategies for comprehension in academic disciplines; specifically this course will focus on vocabulary development, comprehension development, and reading and writing connection. I will be speaking with you more in detail during class and giving you a syllabus to explain the reading assignments. An important note: You will be assigned to log in to my blog address below and participate in shared readings. You will then Post your opinions and comments on my blog for other students to read. You must respond to 4-6 readings of your classmates' blogs- this is mandatory and is part of your grade. I look forward to meeting you and speaking with you in class. Blog Rubric/Guideline Blog Rubric Hi everyone. Below is a rubric guideline for the class that I will use to evaluate your class participation on posting your discussion and responses on your blogs. Please review it. Blogging Rubric Template This rubric is designed to facilitate a creative and lively online discussion by encouraging strong writing in blog posts and comments. These criteria will be used for the qualitative evaluation of the blog posts and comments.
